Monsterdon: Difference between revisions

Monsterdon is a weekly event on the fediverse, hosted by @Taweret@octodon.social, where people watch a monster movie together by posting to the #monsterdon Hashtag.

Joining

Monsterdon is now on peertube at https://tube.me.jon-e.net/c/monsterdon

Movies usually start at 6pm (pacific time) on Sundays
Search for #monsterdon or #monsterdonAlert to find that week's movie
Movies are available freely somewhere, usually on archive.org or Tubi (see Torrenting archive.org movies )
Start the movie, try to keep synchronized in time, and post with public Post Visibility using the #monsterdon hashtag!

Respectful Posting

Since we have to use the public visibility for posts to go in the hashtag feed, its very easy to totally clog local feeds on smaller instances.

It turns out that replies to posts from a different account don't show up in the local feed, so to spare your instancemates, you can make one root post from an alt account and reply to that with public visibility to post to #monsterdon but not the local feed.

If you remove the @mention in your reply, it doesnt bug the original poster, so if you dont have an alt handy you can just pick any root post from any other account.

To Hide Monsterdon from your feeds:

add a filter for "#monsterdon"
Set to "hide completely"
Check all desired contexts to mute monsterdon posts. (recommend at least home and local feeds, if you don't want to participate at all)
Save the filter!

You can optionally set an expiration for the filter in case you might want to check it out later :).

Many people also will post as a thread of replies, and you can mute just that thread by opening the '...' menu on the root post and selecting "Mute conversation"

Muting/filtering monsterdon is necessary due to a quirk in how mastodon handles Post Visibility. Monsterdon tends to be very noisy - posts have to use public post visibility in order to appear on the timeline, but all public posts including replies are also added to the Local Feed. There is no current method to post only to the #monsterdon feed (see Fine-Grained Post Visibility).
